Abstract : A critical analysis is made of the various factors affecting image quality in photographic and image orthicon image sensors. The important characteristics of the image tube are the high quantum efficiency, the signal generating scan mechanism, and the real-time image information output; they are judged against realistic performance parameters for the metric use of the two sensor types. After the known theoretical relationships are derived, actual working figures are presented for the two receptor systems. The linear response function, the adjustable modulation transfer function, the contrast enhancement potential, and the potential for accurate calibration, make the image orthicon sensor superior to the photographic emulsion in a number of task areas.
