Abstract : Mossbauer results for gold iron and copper iron alloys at 300 K and 4.2 K are analyzed to show that the spins in such alloys point in directions determined by the local environment. For clusters of three or more iron atoms linked as near neighbors, the spins point in directions consistent with a large pseudodipolar anisotropic exchange interaction between near neighbors. For pairs of atoms single ion anisotropy appears to dominate the pseudodipolar anisotropy. It is suggested that the unifying feature of the numerous dilute alloy systems which behave like gold of near neighbors in comparable to or greater than the intercluster or further near neighbor exchange.
