Abstract : The origin of the cubic-to-tetragonal transformation frequently observed in spinel systems with cupric and manganese ions is ascribed to the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion of the oxygen tetra- and octahedron built on these cations. Copper manganite and its mixed compounds exhibit interesting properties. In these spinels, the presence of two Jahn-Teller active ions, Cu(++) and Mn(+++), might cause by opposite action a partly compensation of the distortion, as assumed by Miyahara. In order to investigate this situation and to compare with a similar Jahn-Teller ion case the crystal structure of the copper manganite Cu(x)Mn(1-x)Mn2O4 and the cadmium manganite Cd(x)Mn(1-x)Mn2O4 systems has been studied.
