Abstract : Sound propagation in the deep ocean is not adequately described by the high frequency ray acoustics approximation, and existing wave formulations are limited. A wave solution (valid at low frequencies) is formulated for an idealized representation of the sound speed profile in the deep sound channel. Perturbation theory is applied to the ideal case to form solutions for sound speed profiles found in the ocean. Extensive calculations are made to detail the ideal solutions and to show the validity of the perturbed solutions for some realistic sound speed profiles. (Author)
