Abstract : The report presents data showing the effect of friction due to dirt and moisture on the impulse intervals and the travel of the moving part of the subject rifle. A Caliber 0.300 M-1 Rifle was fired with the barrel held rigidly in a trunnion block on the barrel four inches from the muzzle. The impulses transmitted to these trunnions were measured with piezo-electric gauges, and simultaneously, displacement time records of the motion of the bolt, operating rod, and receiver were obtained. The rifle was then dusted and atomized with water while the same measurements were being made. These measurements show the effect of increasing friction on the impulse intervals and the travel of the moving parts. (Author)
