Abstract : Navy training manuals require continuing revision in order to remain current. considerable time and man-effort are required to accomplish the revision of such manuals. The use of a computer assisted document preparation system in the update of these manuals offers potential for significant reductions in both the elapsed time and the man-effort required to complete a revision cycle. The report relates the results of a pilot project initiated to test the feasibility of using such a computer-based text editing system to update Navy training manuals. The CSMS (Computerized Specification Management System), a text editing system, was used to prepare revised editions of two Navy training manuals and their associated correspondence courses. Modification and enhancement of the original system was required to provide additional font and character capabilities. Significant reductions in elapsed time and man-effort required to update a manual were achieved. (Author)
