Abstract : Experiments were conducted to measure the effectiveness of an animated visual display of frequency components comprising transient, undersea acoustic signals to assist subjects in learning to identify such signals. The acoustic signals were processed through a set of bandpass filters tuned across the audio spectrum. Samples of the spectral envelopes were stored and used to animate a quasi three-dimensional display format showing the amplitude variations of the several frequency bands over several seconds of preceeding time. An analog network imparted perspective to the display and enhanced the three-dimensional effect. The display effectiveness was evaluated through a set of identification experiments administered to untrained subjects. Comparisons were made between bisensory inputs of visual and auditory stimuli, and unisensory inputs of either visual or auditory stimuli. Methods were also investigated for generating an animated display of low frequency acoustic signals which are masked by noise. (Author)
