Abstract : Vacuum-deposited, light emitting films of zinc sulphide were investigated for use in airborne electronic displays. A very high contrast display structure was evolved through use of a transparent emitter film with a contiguous black backing which exhibited a diffuse reflectivity of less than 0.5 percent. Thus moderate display brightness levels (15 ft-L) with long-life characteristics are made practical for use in bright conditions. Times to half-brightness in excess of 4000 hours were measured. This represents several orders of magnitude improvement over the state of the art. With nominal voltage reset, operational life in excess of 14,000 hours resulted. A recently developed pulse-resonant mode driver is described which can efficiently drive the light emitting film to more than 30 ft-L brightness under 1-percent duty cycle using 12 volts DC. Operating characteristics of the light emitting film are described, as well as various operational formats (5x7 dot matrix, seven-segment numeric, bar graphs, aircraft situation display). (Author)
