Abstract : The object of the program was to optimize certain parameters in the explosive forming of thick walled domes using a free forming technique (generally referred to as the 'sandwich method') in which two blanks are formed simultaneously; without the use of a die. This is accomplished by centering two blanks on a pancake charge, attaching a low density material, such as polystyrene, to the opposite sides of the blanks and detonating the charge with the setup buried under 6 in. of fine sand. The study was done using ASTM-A-36 steel blanks, 1/2 in. thick with diameters ranging from 8 to 22 in. The explosive used was SWP-5. (Author)
