Abstract : Analyzing electrocardiograms for occurrence of premature ventricular contractions is accomplished quickly and accurately using an analog computer. Electrocardiograms are recorded on magnetic tape and fed into the computer. Once an initial gain adjustment is made, the detection process is carried out automatically. Both premature ventricular contractions and supraventricular contractions can be detected and differentiated. The computer generates an output pulse for each occurrence of either of these two abnormal complexes. The pulses constitute a means of triggering a counter for totalization and numerical display. In a magnetic tape recording containing a total of 32 randomly occurring premature ventricular contractions and supraventricular contractions, detection accuracy varied from 94 to 100% depending on the values of certain preset program parameters.
