Abstract : A consistent method of obtaining data from individual auditory neurons has been developed which utilizes a unique x-ray procedure for calculating the precise location of the internal auditory meatus. In an effort to provide a complex and meaningful stimulus, sigements of human speech sounds have been recorded and presented to the experimental animal by means of an elaborate electronic system. The resultant neural responses are detected by a microelectrode mounted on a hydraulic drive unit, amplified, and switched via a sophisticated electronic network to a computer system where, after being digitized, they are investigated using several statistical analysis programs.
