Abstract : In the last 8-10 years, in the United States and Canada, work has begun in the field of algotoxicology, mainly in connection with the investigation of specific substances of selective action - organic algicides, suppressing the development of individual forms or groups of algae or possessing uniform toxic action on algae of various systematic groups. Research work in this area includes a modification of the oxygen method, the basic principle of which consists in the determination of the character of the action of test substances on the photosynthesis of algae. In so far as the photosynthesis is a basic vital process of any growing organism, its suppression or strengthening, determined by the amount of the production of oxygen by the algae, may be the most indicative characteristic of the suppressing or stimulating action of the test substance. The effectiveness of the oxygen method for controlling algae is discussed.
