Abstract : As the armed forces move toward a volunteer force, it becomes necessary to identify procurement and retention strategies which will be effective in maintaining viable force levels. A representative sample of AFROTC advanced cadets were surveyed to determine the effect of certain incentives on volunteerism, to identify AFROTC cadet attitudes toward a military assignment, and to evaluate the effect of certain aspects of military life on career decision. Results indicate that choice of career field and pay comparable to civilian earning capacity had the most influence in attracting volunteer officers, although negligible differences in officer quality were found between incentives.
