Abstract : A simplified sea breeze model is presented from which can be calculated the mean speed of the local wind systems along coasts where diurnal winds are common. Input requirements (air temperature difference between sea and land and horizontal dimensions of wind system call) can be readily obtained from published data or remotely monitored by satellites or high-altitude aircraft. Sea temperatures (which are a satisfactory substitute for sea air temperature) are available in oceanographic atlases, and land temperatures can be obtained from NOAA or World Meteorological Organization publications. Sea breeze systems are common along many of the world's coasts, and knowledge of such wind systems can significantly affect the success of coastal operations. The model presented allows some predictive capability in areas where sufficient details of wind systems are not available. (Author)
