Abstract : The research was part of a program on the use of phosphoric acid fuel cells fueled by dirty hydrogen produced by thermocracking or steam reforming of a hydrocarbon. Matrices and anodes for phosphoric acid fuel cells have been developed and tested. Matrices showing no appreciable degradation in performance (bubble pressure) over 1000 hours have been made. These matrices contain Kynol and a phenolic thermosetting binder. Anodes capable of operation in fuel mixtures containing up to 2% carbon monoxide and hydrogen have been tested in fuel cells. These anodes, containing less than 2 milligrams of noble metal per square centimeter, have been operating at satisfactory performance levels for more than 2000 hours. (Author)
