Abstract : The primary purpose of this program has been to investigate switching phenomena in pure and doped organic films. The switching phenomena observed in organic films is quite different from that obtained with inorganic films and the mechanisms which have been developed to explain switching in inorganic films are in general not applicable to organic systems. For this reason a great deal of effort is spent in characterizing the films: isolating those factors such as film composition, thickness, and structure which control the observed phenomena. In addition the authors have investigated in some detail the electronic conduction processes in metal/organic film/metal sandwiches and these studies have contributed to the understanding of the switching phenomena. The results of the switching studies are briefly outlined. (Author)
