Abstract : The interaction of non-polar gases such as Ar, Kr and N2 with homogeneous samples of NaCl, RbF, NH4I, BN and copper single crystals have been investigated. Samples of NaCl and NH4I of unusual homogeneity have been prepared and characterized as have been samples of BN and single crystals of Copper displaying the (1,1,1) face. Two major experimental aspects have been carried out in these studies: The determination of precise low coverage adsorption data; and The determination of high coverage and multilayer adsorption data. These studies have been made over a large range of temperatures and pressures. The purpose of the research was to investigate (a) the forces existing between solids and gases, the forces existing between molecules adsorbed on homogeneous substrates, and the theoretical and experimental nature of adsorption on homogeneous but not necessarily uniform substrates where by homogeneous we mean solids for which there is a periodically varying potential over the surface.
