Abstract : The concept of filtering analog signals using digital processing is not a new idea. However, until recently the development of digital filtering has been restricted to computer simulation programs and usually only in nonreal-time applications. The main restrictions of real-time realizations have been the cost, speed and complexity of available digital hardware. This situation is now being remedied by the rapidly developing large-scale integration (LSI) technology for digital circuitry. The large amount of digital hardware contained in the small LSI packages and the modularity obtainable from these circuits have given great impetus to the development of many new digital circuit applications, including digital filtering.
