Abstract : AMPLE, AN EARLY-MORNING ANOMALY AND AN AFTERNOON ANOMALY, NOT PREVIOUSLY EDUCED, ARE DESCRIBED, AND THEIR SEASONAL AND GEOGRAPHIC CHARACTER ARE STUDIED; THEIR EXISTENCE REQUIRES CONSIDERABLE MODIFICATION OF THE CURRENTLY ACCEPTED, HYPOTHESIZED IONOSPHERIC-CURRENT SYSTEM, AS WELL AS OF THE UNDERLYING ATMOSPHERIC-DYNAMO THEORY. The authors introduce the daytime range as a useful characterization of the diurnal variation; its day-to-day variability is shown to be uncorrelated with solar activity, and is consequently presumed to have a terrestrial cause. Daytime range is also used to investigate the correlation of diurnal variation between stations as a function of distance and season. There are many indications that large-scale weather systems affect the ionospheric currents. (Author)
