Abstract : The overall kinetics of the gas phase oxidation of ammonia was investigated by a flow reactor technique over a temperature range of 1106-1377K. The fuel equivalence ratio ranged from 0.53 to 4.97 with the reactor operated at atmospheric pressure. Concentration profiles through the distributed reaction zone were obtained with mass spectrometric gas analysis. Reaction rate constant and reaction orders for the overall reaction were determined by a multiple linear regression analysis. An analytical study of reacting duct flow was completed to investigate flow modeling for kinetic interpretation of the experimental data. Turbulence was modeled using a Prandtl mixing length formulation of the turbulent viscosity with van Driest wall damping. The kinetics of ammonia oxidation have been reviewed in detail along with the homogeneous decomposition of ammonia. A reaction mechanism for ammonia decomposition has been proposed.
