Abstract : The 12th Weather Squadron has been conducting applied research into the field of computer-derived weather map types. The aim has been to incorporate map typing techniques into a terminal forecast system. Through the use of a electronic data processing methods, a technique has been developed to objectively select recurring circulation patterns. These patterns, or map types, can be developed into a catalog for a specific geographical area, depicting synoptic climatological information for each type. In real-time use, a centralized computer can provide the meteorologist with the map type for the current and prognostic synoptic situation and the associated climatological probabilities of different weather phenomean for each terminal. The meteorologist is thus provided with a reliable first-guess forecast. (Author)
