Abstract : In the report a review of existing numerical techniques for the solution of the direct problem of inviscid flow past two-dimensional bodies at supercritical or transonic Mach numbers is undertaken with particular emphasis on the problem of airfoil design. It is shown that if the ideal of isentropic recompression is to be thoroughly investigated then a large number of popular simplified techniques are per se inadequate; that a complete (numerical) solution of the equations of flow is necessary. On the basis of failure of two known techniques to provide a satisfactory answer, the classical stability and convergence theories are discussed with the design of economical iterative schemes in mind.
