Abstract : The scattering of electromagnetic radiation by clouds of various particles has been a topic of continuing scientific interest. The advent of the laser has allowed these studies to be pursued into the visible portions of the spectrum. The report is concerned with: The attenuation of a laser beam by flowing particulate clouds of various materials; The empirical determination of the extinction coefficient of graphitic carbon under high power laser beam interaction with a flowing particulate cloud of graphitic carbon; The determination of the index of refraction of graphitic carbon; and The use of this index to determine the theoretical extinction coefficient of the graphitic carbon on a single particle basis.
