Abstract : In vitro dissociation curves obtained with van Slyke's manometer (spherical tonometer) were plotted for 6 humans, 6 rabbits, 12 guinea pigs, 5 dogs, 8 cats, 8 pigs, 6 cattle, and 7 sheep. The average error from the mean value curves was between 0.2 and 0.4 mm HgPO2 for animals and 1.0 mm HgPO2 for humans. The curves of humans, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, pigs, and cattle at 50% O2 saturation, 37C and a pHS of 7.4 were between 26.8 and 30.8 mm Hg PO2. The curves for cats and sheep were significantly to the right at 36.3 and 33.7 mm Hg PO2 with a 50% blood saturation. There is no basis to support that individual animals within a species present different O2-DC. Individual differences have been found in man; the greatest difference found is 5.8 mm Hg PO2 at 50% saturation. (Author)
