Abstract : The purpose of the investigation of cement-replacement materials, was to develop procedures for tests involving field-size equipment and aggregate. Seven 5- by 10- by 15-ft field blocks and several small test specimens were cast from concrete batched, mixed, and placed using 2-cu-yd equipment. Seven mixtures were used, representing two aggregate sizes, 3 in. and 6 in.; two water-cement ratios, 0.5 and 0.8; and two cement-replacement materials, each in a single percentage of replacement. The field blocks were tested for temperature rise and ultrasonic pulse velocity and cores from the blocks were tested for compressive strength and permeability. Specimens were installed at the exposure station at Treat Island, Maine, to be tested for thermal properties. Results obtained from the various tests indicated that the procedures involved would be generally satisfactory for use in programs of larger scale. (Author)
