Abstract : The report is presented in four volumes, each describing a separate phase of the basic theory of structural dynamic testing using impedance techniques. Volume I presents the results of an analytical and numerical investigation of the practicality of system identification using fewer measurement points than there are degrees of freedom. The parameters in Lagrange's equations of motion, mass, stiffness, and damping for a mathematical model having fewer degrees of freedom than the linear elastic structure it represents may be determined directly from measured mobility data.
