Abstract : Fatigue crack position and depth are measured and recorded on an incremental magnetic tape recorder. The growth of each crack is observed throughout the fatigue life test. The cannons may be fatigued either by hydraulic cycling or firing, or both. Crack location and orientation are measured by a locator which has been designed to provide digital position data while operating on the surface of a cylinder (breech of the cannon). Crack depth is measured electronically using integrated circuits. A Data Acquisition System has been designed to scan the binary coded decimal transducer outputs, format the data, and record on IBM compatible magnetic tape. The circuits used in the crack depth measurement are believed to be unique and patents are being applied for. One of these is a gated, synchronized, inverter chain oscillator operating at 11.6 MHz.
