Abstract : The report presents the initial results of a combined analytical and experimental program whose broad objectives are to achieve a more complete understanding of the operation and appropriate design techniques of compact high-performance MHD generators by further establishing the detailed analytical basis of the performance of these generators and to demonstrate the feasibility of operating compact high-performance MHD generators under a reptitively pulsed mode of operation at high power levels--in this case at the 2 MW level. In particular, the results, of studies of stability, and effects, transient response, diagnostic, rapid startup, channel voltage breakdown and performance optimization are discussed and summarized. A parallel effort under this program has been directed to constructing a generator test facility and designing and fabricating a 2 MW high-performance MHD generator system to be used in the test facility.
