Abstract : The investigation considers some aspects of optical and digital reconstruction techniques as applied to synthetic holograms recorded with suboptical sources. The objects considered are three dimensional, comprising a sequence of planar distributions located at various depths from the hologram plane. The first part of the paper addresses itself to the problem of alleviating the longitudinal distortion that arises in optical reconstruction from suboptical holograms. The second part of the paper considers the digital approach of reconstruction that entails the application of the inverse diffraction transform to the scattered field of an object illuminated with a suboptical source. Advantages and disadvantages of the digital method vis-a-vis the optical method are discussed and both diffuse and non-diffuse types of illumination are considered. (Author Modified Abstract)
