Abstract : The report summarizes the research activities on techniques and devices for room temperature detection of fast pulsed radiation at wavelengths near 10.6 micrometers. Activity was directed toward improvement of the performance of thin-film bolometer room temperature infrared detectors. Bismuth film bolometers with silver contact films were found to possess several disadvantages. The author has subsequently developed for bismuth film detectors using bismuth contact films an improved geometry which has improved the sensitivity of these devices by almost a factor of one hundred without degradation of their fast response time.
