Abstract : The purpose of the study was to investigate, for various geometries, the relative importance of the mass and the momentum of the control signal on the switching time of bistable amplifiers and the movement of the reattachment point of a jet reattached to a wall. Different ratios of the mass to the momentum of the control flow have been obtained by using control gases of different densities. The flow field study included control velocity and wall pressure measurements during switching in bistable amplifiers as well as during the movement of the reattachment point for a jet reattachment to a wall. The results indicate that the momentum flux ratio of control to supply flow is a much more important parameter in determining the flow evolution than the mass flux or volume flux ratio.
