Abstract : The development and use of computerized methods for drawing refraction diagrams of waves approaching a coastline offers great advantages over manual techniques that were used in the past. The present computer programs for wave refraction have proved to be reliable, and compare well with manual techniques, but, as far as is known, they only consider refraction outside the breaker zone; there is no program--or even manual procedure--that fully considers refraction beyond the breaker zone. The study extends the computerized wave refraction process beyond the breaking zone and over shoaling areas. It applies experimental data to the irregular conditions encountered in shoaling areas, in such a way that a manageable and reliable program is achieved. This is done by means of graphical interpretation and mathematical treatment. (Author Modified Abstract)
