Abstract : The sonic boom problem for typical aircraft maneuvers in a polytropic atmosphere is solved analytically using the analytic method of characteristics. The linearized wave propagation, which serves as initial solution to the method of characteristics, is solved first. The characteristic method is modified to encompass the case of an oncoming stream with variable sound velocity. (Author Modified Abstract)
