Abstract : The effects of adding excess cupric sulfate to the standard Fricke dosimeter system were observed in measuring large radiation doses. Various concentrations of ferrous ammonium sulfate in this system were investigated for deviations from linear response. The effects of various concentrations of cupric sulfate were also observed. A solution containing 0.003 M ferrous ammonium sulfate, 0.01 M cupric sulfate, and 0.01 N sulfuric acid gave a linear response to doses in excess of 2.0 Mrad and was chosen for further study. The G(Fe(3+))Cu(2+) values for this solution were determined both for 60Co gamma radiation and for 6 Mev electrons produced by a clinical linear accelerator, and were found in both cases to be 0.66 ions/100 ev absorbed. Self-oxidation of the final dosimeter solution and the stability of induced signals were also observed. (Author)
