Abstract : A Naval station was authorized to conduct an investigation into noise producing characteristics of various elastomers used for stern tube and strut bearings on Naval vessels. The report presents, as a portion of this investigation, the results of an intensive study of natural rubber staves and Buna 'N' staves of four different hardnesses. In addition, some preliminary information on GRS synthetic rubber, laminated phenolics, and lignum vitae is reported. Tests were conducted on a 14 in. diameter by 18 in. long bearing assembly, on a special 10 in. diameter single stave machine, and on a 6 in. diameter by 12 in. long half bearing assembly.
