Abstract : Historically, visual reconnaissance has played a major part in tactical air operations. The report provides the pilot and observer with information to enhance this performance as visual observer. The most salient factors stressed herein are effective training for pertinent circumstances of operation, adequate briefing and preplanning, knowing where to look and what to look for, rehearsing, recognition of personal limitations, and preparing reports beforehand so that only blocks need to be filled in. The factors of target contrast, meteorological visibility, target size and other parameters are discussed and nomograms are provided for rapid and easy computations. (Author)
