Abstract : Physical and mechanical properties of the whiskerized carbon fibers are investigated. Whiskerized fibers in epoxy composites gave short beam shear strengths to 10,000 psi compared to 4000 psi for as received unwhiskered fibers in composites. But whiskerizing weakened the fibers, resulting in a nominal 15% tensile strength reduction. Both batch and continouos processes whiskerizing were developed, with on-stream resin impregnation also added to the continuous whiskerizing process. Whiskerized chopped fiber prepreg was investigated as a molding compound, but gave no consistent improvement over unwhiskered fiber for the same purpose. (Author, modified-PL)
