Abstract : Explorer 35 data on energetic solar particle events show that intensity ratios of H to He (p/alpha) and of He to Z > or = 3 ions (alpha/M) in the sub-MeV specific energy range (epsilon = or > 0.5 MeV/nucleon) vary from event to event and more especially during the time history of individual events. Ranges of observed values are 10 < p/alpha < 90 and 3 < alpha/M < 27. The interpretation emphasizes two interplanetary propagation effects as principally responsible for the observed variability of the intensity ratios of the various ionic species: (a) differential diffusion and (b) changes in intensity and spectra caused by reflection of diffusing particles by propagating magnetic discontinuities.
