Abstract : The effects of overall attitudinal similarity and task relevant affiliative status together with three situational factors on the choice of comparison others were examined. The situational factors were (1) presence or absence of a monetary reward for task performance, (2) whether the comparison other was to be an information source or a work partner, and (3) whether the choice was being made before or after Ss completed preliminary work on the task. The results indicate that the general impression conveyed by such general attitudinal information may be more important in the selection of referent others than comparability on specific situationally relevant factors.
