Abstract : A coaxial plasma accelerator (arc-jet engine) without an external magnetic field is operated stationarily at discharge currents of 1000 to 6000 amps using argon as working fluid. Integral performance data of the device are presented. The method of deducing therefrom values of the mean mass velocity and efficiency is discussed with concern to the possibility of entrainment. The flow field is investigated by the aid of aerodynamic yaw and Pitot probes. Experimental investigations and a theoretical analysis indicate that the mass flow rate should not fall below a lower limit in order to establish a stationary discharge mode at a constant arc-current.
