Abstract : The collapse of a homogeneous fluid mass immersed in a vertically stratified fluid is studied analytically. Simple approximate theories are given for initial and intermediate stages of the process and the predictions agree well with a previous experiment. The theory shows that a previous approximate solution of the problem is deficient. The energy content of the mixed region versus time is traced; the mixed region gives up most of its energy to the surrounding fluid in one Brunt-Vaisala period. (Author)
