Abstract : Ice thickness is one of the basic indices which characterize the ice cover of the Arctic seas. Therefore, a great deal of work has been devoted to the study of the laws governing its change in dependence upon hydrometeorological conditions. In the majority of the investigations, however, the thicknesses of level ice -- which in the Arctic seas is encountered rather rarely -- are examined. The situation hampers the use of empirical or analytical methods for determining ice thickness concurrent with different degrees of hummocking. If the influences of hummocking is not taken into account, then the calculated values of the ice thicknesses can differ considerably from the actual. As shown by numerous observations taken in fast ice, an increase of ice hummocking results in an increase of its thickness not only in the zone of the hummocks, but also in the comparatively level areas situated among the hummocks. At the same time the ice thickness was measured, visual observations were made on the ice hummocking in the vicinity of the measurements, and the results of these observations were fixed on film simultaneously with the recording of the thickness.
