Abstract : Studies were made on the effects of added Cd(2+), Ni(2+), Na(+), Zn(2+), Pd(2+), and Co(2+) on the oxidation rate of C3H8 in H3PO4 of concentration 80 to 95 wt % at 130C on platinized Pt electrodes. Dissolved Cd(2+) discharges, probably as Cd, and forms a stable submonolayer on a Pt electrode at potentials as high as 0.5 V versus RHE. This Cd layer inhibits C3H8 adsorption even though it itself is apparently substantially desorbed in favor of adsorbed hydrocarbon. The Cd layer inhibits the C3H8 oxidation rate. However, the C3H8 oxidation rate is observed to increase under some circumstances. Co-plating of Cd and Pt leads to an electrode which, once the excess Cd has been removed, appears to be stable, and which catalyzes C3H8 oxidation. Ni(2+) catalyzes C3H8 and CH4 oxidation, although no Ni is formed on the electrode. The research was part of a study of hydrocarbon air fuel cells.
