Abstract : Techniques were established for the preparation of high density, and homogeneous polycrystalline samples of Ni-Mn spinel and Co-Fe spinel. Contact preparation and evaluation were performed for samples of these two compounds. Non-blocking and low capacitance metallic contacts have been deposited by D. C. sputtering in a clean ultra-high vacuum system. The high electric field dependence of the conductivity of the spinel compounds Ni(0.65)Mn(2.35)O(4) and Co(1.05)Fe(1.95)O(4) were measured. Thermal changes in the conductivity due to joule self-heating were measured and calculated and the thermal changes were used to correct total high field changes to give the true electric field dependent conductivity. The measured linear electric field dependence of the conductivity is found to be in disagreement with a simple diffusion theory of hopping. (Author)
