Abstract : The report briefly summarizes work on the branded-chain mechanism of propane/oxygen/fluorine explosions which has just been completed. it was shown that peroxy propyl radicals have a labile 2h-atom that may react with 2o2 to form ho2. 2it was estimated that sufficient energy is released to dissociate 2ho2 to 2oh and o, which would change the character of the reaction from chain-breaking to chain-branching. It is theorized that OH and O are formed instead of HO2 if the reaction between peroxy alkyl radicals and O2 is preceded by condensation of the radicals with aldehyde, and that this reaction sequence controls the low-temperature ignition regime of alkane/oxygen systems. Results obtained to date show that the butane systems are chemically rather complex but are similarly inhibited by O2.
