Abstract : Four high frequency approximations appropriate to problems concerned with wave propagation in stratified media are studied to gain some insight into their domains of validity. The four schemes - ray theory, complex ray theory, diffracted ray theory, and the Caustic Boundary Layer approximation (sometimes referred to as modified ray theory) - are investigated through comparisons with exactly known results and experimental data.
