Abstract : An investigation of the factors affecting the design of charge-coupled image sensors was undertaken. Single-line three-phase charge-coupled sensors having 100 to 500 elements have been produced on n or p-type substrates. A 45 x 60 element three-phase sensor array has been built and evaluated. Picture qualith has been generally excellent although resolution was limited in some samples by transfer losses. Sensor designs which prevent spurious signals (or 'blooming') due to bright objects in the scene are discussed. Sensor output circuits which allow effective separation of the clock signals have been tested. Novel circuits have been proposed for improving the operating sensitivity of charge-transfer sensors at very low light levels. These include circuits permitting operation at reduced threshold scene brightness by controllable exchange of resolution for signal-to-noise ratio. (Author)
