Abstract : The Schumann resonance frequencies of the Earth-Ionosphere cavity at approximately 8, 14 and 20 Hz provide a method for obtaining a world average of the (zero-magnetic field) electrical conductivity of the 'Ionosphere' down to 40 km altitude. If the cavity Q or wave attenuation can be accurately measured, the average electrical conductivity below 40 km can also be determined. Numerical models are analyzed to show the effect of conductivity changes at various altitude ranges upon the resonance frequencies. Several conductivity profiles for periods corresponding to different levels of solar activity are derived from experimentally determined Schumann resonance frequencies. (Author)
