Abstract : Thick turbulent boundary layers intended to simulate neutral atmospheric layers are generated in wind tunnels by the 'natural long-fetch' technique in 'long' tunnels and by various drag-and turbulence-producing obstructions in 'short' tunnels. The target atmospheric layers actually consist of a succession of quasi-equilibrium boundary layers diffusing within older boundary layers as the ground roughness and topography change. Some philosophy for testing of aerodynamic characteristics of models of proposed buildings is drawn from comparison of the above layers. (Author Modified Abstract)
