Abstract : The article deals first with the theoretical foundations of underwater hearing, and the effects of the acoustical characteristics of water on hearing are described. Experiments on the subject are then reviewed. Two aspects of underwater hearing of special interest are discussed. Stimulus transmission: it can be taken as proved that underwater sound is received only by bone conduction. Sound localisation: theory and first experimental results lead to the conclusion that, in water, man can locate the direction of sound at low and at very high tonal frequencies of the audio range, but this ability is probably vanishing in the middle range of frequencies.
